Media figures dominate Arabian Business Brit List

Media leaders have dominated the second edition of the Arabian Business Brits List – a study that lists the top 50 most influential British expatriates in the UAE.

While MBC Group’s CEO Sam Barnett has landed the top media spot, ranked 4th most influential Brit, Starcom MediaVest Group’s CEO John Antoniades isn’t far behind in 5th place. John Brash, owner of Brash Brands has also made the cut, ranked 17, Motivate Publishing’s Managing Partner Ian Fairservice comes in at number 27, while BBC Middle East Correspondent Mark Lobel snagged the 30th spot. Other notable media influencers who have made the top 50 include television and radio personality Tom Urquhart, DABO & CO Managing Partners Camilla and Lucy D’Abo, Face to Face agency owner Chris Bell and Francis Matthew, Editor at Large, Gulf News.

Carmel Gill joins the Emirates Woman team

Carmel Gill has joined the Emirates Woman team as Fashion and Beauty Assistant. Carmel, who previously worked as a Sales Associate for UK-based fashion brand,The Kooples, as well as Fashion Assistant for online fashion store, Tinnedbananas.com, is now responsible for assisting the Style Editor and Style Director on photo shoots, in addition to contributing to some of the fashion pages in the magazine.

“I fell in love with Dubai when I visited last year on holiday,” says Carmel. “I grew up in a small village in the West Yorkshire countryside so it is worlds apart from where I am from, and Dubai just amazes me. It really is a city of opportunities and it has been the best decision of my life moving here as I landed my dream job at Emirates Woman.

Emirates Man well received in market

Emirates Man magazine, the new bi-monthly men’s glossy from Motivate Publishing, has announced great feedback from the market since the title hit news stands on March 1, 2014.

“We’re thrilled with the initial response we’ve had to the launch of Emirates Man,” says Mark Evans, Group Editor. “The aim was always to create something different, something unlike anything else in the market, a magazine that really spoke to – and for – the men of the Emirates, and I think we’ve achieved that. It’s been great fun to put together – the team put a lot of hard work and effort, and I think it shows. We’re all very proud of the end result.”

Whatson.ae goes live

Motivate Publishing has today increased its online presence with the launch of WhatsOn.ae. The platform, which bills itself as the go-to guide for expert opinion, insider info, news, reviews, entertainment, competitions and more, will complement the print magazine, while offering its own unique content.

“We’re really proud of what we have created, especially with the launch campaign which celebrates 35 years of Dubai (http://whatson.ae/dubai/knowledge/3081/35-years-of-whats-on-dubai/),” says Matthew Fortune, WhatsOn.ae’s Web Editor. “As the longest-running entertainment magazine in the region, we’re  in a unique position at having watched this incredible city grow into the exciting hub it is today. Chris Capstick joins Motivate as Publisher

Chris Capstick joins Motivate as Publisher of the business division after nearly five years as Advertisement Director at Dubai-based contract publisher Hot Media. Chris previously held roles as Sales Director at Nicholas Publishing and Senior Advertisement Manager at ITP. Chris will be reporting to Anthony Milne, General Manager – Group Sales.

“I am delighted to be joining Motivate Publishing at this exciting stage in the company’s growth, and look forward to contributing to the ongoing success of this great organisation,” says Chris.

New Fashion & Beauty Editor at Hello!

Annah Cuthbert, former Assistant Online Editor at the Emirates Woman Group, has taken over as Fashion & Beauty Editor of Hello! Middle East.

“I am so thrilled to be joining Hello! Middle East as Fashion & Beauty Editor,” says Annah, who initially joined the Emirates Woman group as an intern in 2011 and quickly worked her way up the ranks. “I’m looking forward to offering our readers the latest news on all things style and beauty related week after week.”

Hype magazine welcomes new Editor

Lesley Wright has been named as the new Editor at Hype: Powered By Mixmag magazine, the nightlife and music guide, available free, weekly, throughout the UAE. Previously Editor of world-renowned dance music title DJ Magazine in London for nine years, Lesley started her new role at Motivate Publishing this week.

“I’m really thrilled to be joining this exciting new title,” says Lesley. “The UAE’s music and club scene is fresh and exciting and we’ll be capturing that in Hype, bringing international DJs and bands to a local audience and supporting the army of city-based promoters who have created such a thriving scene.”

New Editor of Open Skies announced

Gareth Rees has taken over as Editor of Emirates Airline’s inflight magazine, Open Skies, published by Motivate Publishing. Previously Food Editor of What’s On magazine, Gareth was promoted to Deputy Editor of the multi award-winning monthly title in January 2012, and now replaces former editor, Conor Purcell.

“As anybody who has picked up a copy on an Emirates flight will know, Open Skies is not your typical inflight magazine,” says Gareth. “I worked with my predecessor, Conor Purcell, for 18 months, commissioning some of the industry’s most talented writers, designers, illustrators and photographers, and I will continue to work with the team to challenge perceptions of what an inflight magazine is and can be, whilst putting my own stamp on a title that has already won numerous awards. I hope to win more.”

What’s On to launch online

Motivate Publishing is expanding its online presence with the What’s On website set to go live in the final quarter of 2013. Billing itself as the go-to guide for expert opinion, insider info, news, reviews, entertainment, competitions and more, the online platform will attract everyone from foodies to thrill-seekers and fashionistas.

“The job of launching the What’s On website gets ever more exciting from day-to-day,” says new What’s On Online Editor, Matthew Fortune who joined the team in August. “The challenge of developing unique content to perfectly partner the magazine is one that I, and those I meet, have seized with both hands.”

“It promises to be a thrilling few months,” Matthew adds.

Alice Nikalls bags permanent post at Hello!

Having joined Hello! Middle East on a temporary basis in earlier this year, Alice Nikalls has now accepted a full-time position within the publication. As Junior Writer, Alice will cover features, news and local interest stories – including launches and events.

“I joined Hello! Middle East in May 2013 and have been fortunate enough to interview some local personalities, snoop around some fabulous homes and dine in some of Dubai’s best restaurants,” says Alice. “Hello! Middle East is a small yet dynamic team and I’m excited to be a part of it for the long-term”.
