Ahlan! magazine reveals new editorial team

Ahlan! magazine, part of ITP Media Group, has made major appointments and structural changes to reveal a brand new editorial team. Mark Dinning, previously Editor-in-Chief of British film magazine, Empire has been appointed to the role of Editorial Director. He brings with him extensive experience in the publishing and entertainment industry and will focus on new projects as well as the development of the brand’s digital and print portfolio.

Following the appointment of Andre Neveling as Editor, Ellen Kerry will be joining him as Deputy Editor. Having previously worked in the UK with heat magazine as Style Editor and most recently as a freelance Fashion, Beauty and Lifestyle Editor, Ellen will take on her new role and work alongside Andre across local and international editorial content of the title.

Elizabeth Ingram will take on the role of Managing Art Director, ITP Consumer. With experience in working on global media titles including Time Out magazine as Group Art Director and Grazia magazine as Senior Designer, Elizabeth’s new role will be to oversee the art direction of the Ahlan! brand.

Previously Advertising Director at Ahlan! magazine, Walid Chehab has been promoted to Commercial Director of the Ahlan! Group. In his new role, he will be responsible for driving the revenue across the brand’s print, digital and event portfolio.

Grow granted Google Partner Badge

Dubai based digital agency, Grow has been awarded the Google Partner Badge for its excellence in Google search advertising, display advertising, mobile advertising and Google analytics. The certification recognised Grow’s ability to demonstrate growth and the maximum ROI for its clients after going through the Google AdWords product certification exam. The Google Partner Badge certification will now see Grow work alongside Google and enjoy exclusive access to regular trainings, Google events, new business opportunities and support for campaigns as well as become a part of the beta test for Google’s new software.

With the Top CEO Conference and Awards coming up, Team TMN sit down with Julien Hawari, Co-CEO at Mediaquest Corp., to find out what to expect from the upcoming event…

Tell us about the Top CEO Conference and Awards…

The Top CEO Conference is a very unique concept – It brings together people from across the region to discuss the important issues that are making an impact today. This year’s theme is ‘Adapting to disruption: New Roles, new realities’. Regionally, low oil prices have had a huge impact on businesses and governments, leading to a tremendous number of changes, including new laws, regulations and taxes, plus a more open market. In addition, businesses and governments in the region have had to adapt to the introduction and impact of new technology and the fourth Industrial revolution. Attracting businessmen and women from the region, as well as key government officials and top academics, the Top CEO Conference discusses all of these topics and more, to help find solutions and drive businesses forward. Meanwhile, the Top CEO Awards celebrate the region’s best business leaders.

When did the Top CEO Conference and Awards launch in the Middle East?

The Top CEO Conference and Awards were launched almost four years ago, the result of a very simple premise, which was that the region was transforming and we needed to acknowledge and celebrate the people and companies that are helping in this transformation, creating growth and enabling good corporate governance and transparency in the region.

What were the challenges you faced when you first launched the event?

The first event was quite a challenge, because we did it in order to change things, to bring transparency to the awards and bring in-depth conversations to the conference. It took a lot of energy to ensure that our message was clear and the execution, perfect.

As a Co-CEO at Mediaquest Corp., why did you feel the need to launch Top CEO in the region?

The idea of starting the awards came more than four years ago, following a conversation with a friend. He mentioned how the GCC and Middle East are transforming and said the future is about the people, companies and CEOs that are creating value for shareholders and growing the regional business landscape by creating jobs, and also ensuring more corporate governance as well as more transparency. Along with the team behind TRENDS media, we created an awards ceremony that was very unique. There is no opt-in or opt-out, all publicly listed companies are evaluated and there is no fee for this evaluation. The Top CEO Awards were launched to put forward and celebrate the companies and their CEOs who are taking the region to the next level. The awards are based on hard facts and the listing is arrived at using a formula that was developed by us in collaboration with INSEAD Business School. We also worked with Hawkamah to find out how best to measure some of the corporate governance transparency criteria. One of the Big Four auditors help ensure that we have the same level of rigor and transparency on our side.

When and where will this year’s event take place?

The event will take place from April 10 – 11, 2017 in King Abdullah Economic City, Saudi Arabia.

Why did you choose Saudi Arabia?

For the past two years, Saudi Arabia has been going through a magnificent transformation, economic regulation and a complete uplift of the economy that is helping make the fantastic Vision 2030 a reality. Saudi Arabia is also the largest market in the region, so it makes sense for a conversation that looks into the future of the region to be held there.

How will 2017’s conference be different, compared to the previous years’?

The conference this year takes the best of the previous years and builds on it. We have a very strong conversation that will discuss not just the challenges the region is facing, but also the opportunities being created, from the consequences of slow growth, to adapting to the new technology that is transforming business. Other additions this year include round-table sessions, as well as private sessions and meetings that will take place on April 10. These sessions will help the region formulate some answers to the question of what is going on globally in the world of business and how this impacts business in the region. These sessions will also look into anti-dumping and anti-trust laws.

For the media industry, one of the most important conversations that we will have at the Top CEO Conference looks at the need for the region to put in place some regulations to create a more level playing field, in terms of competition between global digital players and the regional ecosystem.

What has been your advertising strategy in the Middle East?

The Top CEO event is very particular. It reaches a very specific audience in the region, CEOs, board members, C-level executives and managing directors. It was extremely complicated to find a cost-effective way to reach this entire population – we relied on many different approaches such as, direct marketing and direct shipment, thanks to the help of our partner DHL, TV advertisements on several TV channels across the region, advertisement on print media, as well as regular above-the-line advertisements, digital advertisements and social media campaigns.

Please elaborate on the topics of discussion.

As mentioned, this year’s discussion is on adapting to disruption, what businesses and governments need to do in an age of complexity, where every single part of business is being disrupted by new challenges and how this should be done while maintaining and growing the customer base.

Can you tell us about the speakers at the event? Will it feature speakers from the media/communications/advertising industries?

There will be more than 40 different speakers at the Top CEO Conference and Awards. What makes the list very special this year is that all of the speakers, both from the region and abroad, will address fundamental disruptions that are impacting the market and share ideas on how best to adapt to these changes. They will also touch upon digital disruption and the fourth industrial revolution, as well as some other, more fundamental issues impacting the region and how all of these are modifying the way business is being conducted. How will Top CEO benefit businesses and professionals in the media industry? Why would you recommend that leaders from the industry attend the event?

One of the topics being addressed at Top CEO Conference, which is particularly important for the media industry, is how to regulate the media industry, especially in light of global events impacting the region. Is it time for the region to implement the equivalent of anti-dumping laws? Are global players selling at a fair price or have they amortised most of the infrastructure and selling at discounted prices in the region? These are fundamental questions that the region needs to address. China has put a Chinese twist on different media, Europe has looked into more legislation and taxation. So the region perhaps needs to consider a mix of both. This is an important conversation that needs to take place, and naturally, it is important that the media and communication industry are part of the conversation.

Who is your target audience?

The target audience for the Top CEO Conference and Awards comprises of decision makers, CEOs, C-Level management and managing directors, people who have important business in this part of the world and look into ways to improve the overall economies in the region.

What is the reaction you expect, following the event?

The greatest result following the Top CEO Conference and Awards would be that important conversations essential for the future of the region take place between industry players, with a focus on improving each region at the heart.

InsideOut welcomes new Editor

Interiors and design title, InsideOut, part of GN Media, has appointed Mairead Walsh to the role of Editor. Previously Travel Editor for the Contract Publishing Division at GN Media, Mairead took on the role of Associate Editor for InsideOut six months ago, before being promoted to Editor. In her new role, she will oversee all editorial content for the title as well as lead and grow the InsideOut brand.

In The Hot Seat – Dave Cleary

Team TMN sit down with Dave Cleary, Host of his own show, Loud and Cleary on 97.8 Dance FM, who talks about how he started out in the broadcasting industry in the Middle East and what he thinks of it now…

When did you first arrive in Dubai?

1997

Where did you work prior?

I started out in the region as a part of 104.8 Channel 4 FM when it launched in 1997, and other roles that followed includes Emirates Radio, Nile FM, Radio 1 and Radio 2.

What were your first impressions of the broadcasting industry in the Middle East?

It seemed in a bit of a time warp, I was part of 104.8 Channel 4FM’s launch in 1997, Dubai was in need of a new station. At the time the only other station was Dubai FM. I remember going back to the UK and people had not really heard that much about Dubai – how things have changed, as now everyone knows Dubai. It’s a big global player now.

Has your opinion changed much?

Very much so, I think radio here has really developed and can now rival any major city such as Sydney or Vancouver.

Tell us about your current role…

I present Loud And Cleary weekdays from 4pm until 8pm on the only dance station in the region, Dance FM

What challenges do you face?

Trying to do a good radio show!

What do you think of the quality of radio stations in the region?

I think there are many good stations and presenters on air now in this country. Radio here has really developed to a standard I consider to be as good as markets in Australia and Canada. When I first arrived it was just British nationals on air – it’s great to hear so many different accents these days.

With the increasing demand of visual content, how has radio managed to stay relevant today?

Radio will always be around, it’s the ‘now’ element, and the ‘friend’ element of it. Radio has had to evolve and has to be more visual such as being able to see live in the studio and being very active on digital platforms and so on. May radio live long and prosper!

Has culture in the Middle East posed a challenge or an advantage in the advancement of radio in the region?

When I first came to Dubai I was a bit shocked at what you can and can’t say or do, but now I really feel things have opened up. Its great to do a radio show knowing that you respect peoples cultures and I think in the end it makes you a better radio presenter.

What’s the most rewarding part of your job?

It’s happened a few times, I have been out and someone has come up to me and said, “I grew up listening to you thanks for being part of my life”. When you hear that you understand that sometimes you have an impact on people.

How would you rather be contacted at work?

On phone.

What inspires you?

Travelling.

What’s your most overused saying?

It’s going to be ok, and life is too short.

Social Media, my passport, radio, air conditioning and traveling.

What’s the most exciting thing that has happened to you in your career?

I think when I won Best Radio DJ in 2014 and 2016 at the Ahlan! People’s Choice Awards – I never expected it at all.

If you weren’t in your current role, what would you be doing?

Traveling the world until I ran out of money.

What is your favourite form of media (i.e; TV, radio, print)?

Radio!

How do you see radio changing in the Middle East in the coming years?

The digital age is here for sure – listeners like instant access to the host or presenter, but I think the digital and FM platforms can compliment each other. And as for presenters, you need to offer more than just a cool voice with “that was and this is…”.

Radio 1 and Radio 2 make a comeback

Abu Dhabi Media has officially launched Radio 1 and Radio 2 stations, part of the Abu Dhabi Radio Network. Previously managed by Gulf News Broadcasting, the two radio stations ceased operations late last year and have now re-launched with an all new team of presenters. Radio 1 airs on 100.5 FM in Abu Dhabi and on 104.1 FM in Dubai, while Radio 2 airs on 106 FM in Abu Dhabi and 99.3 FM in Dubai. The stations offer six main programs:

Radio 1:

  • Daily, 6am – 10am: ‘Breakfast Show’, hosted by Nimi and Mark
  • Sunday to Thursday, 10am – 3pm: ‘Fresh and First’, hosted by Chiara
  • Daily, 3pm – 7pm: ‘Drive’, hosted by Dane and Gem

Radio 2:

  • Daily, 6am – 10am: ‘Morning Show’, hosted by Richard Allen and Laura Naylor
  • Daily, 10am – 3pm: ‘The Breeze’, hosted by Sonya Mac
  • Daily, 3pm – 7pm: ‘Drive Time’, hosted by Jason King
